OCC State Advocacy Representative (STAR) Program

The goal of the STAR Program is to support and communicate the mission and goals of the OCC, which is composed of the Obesity Action Coalition (OAC), the Obesity Society (TOS), the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND), the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), and the Obesity Medicine Association (OMA). While each OCC member organization has slightly different responsibilities and service time criteria for their STARs, the overarching goals of the program are the same. In general, STARs: • Serve as scouts for the OMA at the state level; report back to the Chair of the OMA Advocacy Committee when you believe that policy action may be warranted in your state. • Voluntarily represent the OMA on state-based legislative and regulatory activities, such as monitoring legislation, meeting l egislators and/or other elected or appointed officials, attending and/or testifying at legislative hearings. • Establish a relationship with your respective State Insurance Commissioner so that you may be a local resource to them regarding obesity treatment coverage policies. • Work with and coordinate advocacy activities with your STARs in your state from other components of the Obesity Care Continuum organizations (TOS, AND, OAC and ASMBS). • Establish relationships with our partners in patient care, medicine, surgery and industry. For more information regarding the OMA STAR in your state or how you can become involved in the program, please contact OCC Coordinator Chris Gallagher.
