CONCLUSIONS

Obesity is a chronic disease that remains a national healthcare crisis due to its associated morbidity and mortality. Effective treatments for obesity exist across a care continuum. Addressing obesity often starts with primary care providers. Cross-collaboration between healthcare practitioners in primary care and those with expertise in obesity treatment is necessary to develop a comprehensive toolkit, treatment algorithm, and to provide professional education. Establishment of accredited, comprehensive obesity care centers could help deliver this obesity care continuum in one location, offering convenience to patients and optimal cross-disciplinary transfer of relevant information. Familiarity with the regional resources available for patients with obesity and the existence of efficient and reliable referral mechanisms is imperative for primary care providers. Obesity is often stigmatized by the public, in the media, and in the healthcare setting. Recognition of implicit bias and our adherence to guidelines for conversations about obesity may help to minimize this bias. Continued advocacy for improved legislation and insurance coverage is necessary to improve access to care for patients with obesity.
