The journal aims to be a valuable resource to help readers deliver evidence-based obesity treatments based on the OMA’s four pillars of clinical obesity treatment: • Nutrition • Physical Activity • Behavior • Medication Through its scholarly publication, JOMA aims to advance obesity research and serve as a practical guide for physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and other clinicians who manage health, and diagnose the disease of obesity in their patients. JOMA seeks to publish original works based on standards of excellence and expert peer review, and to publish high quality original research ins a gold open access journal – immediately, permanently, and freely accessible for readers.” The purpose of today’s discussion is to present the publisher’s proposal for the Board’s consideration of its major components and to discuss options for next steps including the process of appointing an editor. For ease in discussion, the major components of the publisher’s proposal are: 1. Online Only Journal 2. Open Access Model 3. 35 Forecasted Articles in Year 1 (not required to achieve 35) 4. Article Processing Charge (APC) to Authors (paid by author, institution, or funder) a. $2,000 per article (full rate), Zero in Year 1 b. $1,000 per article (discounted rate), 10 in Year 1 c. Waived APC per article, 25 in Year 1 5. Royalties paid to OMA at 35% above $50,000 of Revenue (No royalties forecasted until Year 3). Revenue is generated through APC, Advertising, Reprints, and etc. 6. Editorial Stipend of $10,000 in Year 1 (contribution toward editor compensation and other editorial office expenses) 7. 5-Year Contract with the publisher 8. Total projected Financial Support for 5 Years a. $80,780 in royalties b. $62,127 contribution for editorial stipend c. $142,907 total over 5 years As previously discussed, in this model the publisher takes on all expenses related to publishing and provides the Association with a royalty share in revenue that grows over time as the journal grows. However, as this is a new journal and the forecasted article volume in the first few years is forecasted to be relatively low, the contribution toward editorial support by the publisher is limited.
