She educates others locally, nationally and internationally regarding diabetes, obesity, lifestyle medicine and nutrition. She has been active in the American Diabetes Association, the American college of physicians, and others.
To say that Dr. Bindlish's professional education and influence in the fields of obesity/diabetes is international in nature is an understatement! Her work reflects a desire to share information and improve the lives of individuals across the globe. From physician colleagues, to trainees, to other healthcare disciplines and most impressively, to the general public, Dr. Bindlish's reach is seemingly endless. As Board Member and Faculty at the ADA, Dr. Bindlish has elevated the understanding of the relationship of the 2 diseases, promoting a better understanding of how physiology can exacerbate the complexity of the interplay of the two diseases; but more importantly how understanding physiology can streamline treatments, improve health and quality of life.
Within OMA, Dr. Bindlish's reach and enthusiasm is boundless....she serves as a reviewer and author for Obesity Pillars. In addition, Dr. Bindlish has given service to several standing and ad hoc Committees where her dedication to education is evident. Mentoring the next generation of practitioners is reflected in her leadership and involvement with the OMA Mentorship program. Dr. Bindlish is a Champion of best practice and care of patients with obesity and her service to this goal brings credit to the OMA and it's goals in an ongoing manner. It is my sincere honor to nominate Dr. Shagun Bindlish for the Dr. Peter G. Lindner Award.

Shagun has outstanding contribution to Obesity Medicine in the community and other organizations. 1. Board Member of American Diabetes Association- Introduced Diabesity and started various projects in the community in collaboration with ADA to bring awareness about TREAT OBESITY FiRST and CONNECTING THE DOTS: Diabetes and Obesity 2. Faculty: Introduced Obesity Medicine in the Diabetes Fellowship Program and taught fellows, Pharmacists, residents, and medical students about Obesity medicine at Touro University. 3. Faculty at University AT sea: One of the major contributions of bringing Obesity medicine to National and International audiences during CME at cruise ( this program is considered unique as the obesity medicine focus was not present before). 4. DiaBeters non-profit organization in Africa- Contributed Webinars and educational articles about Diabetes and Obesity for patient education- connecting with an international audience. 5. Romanian Society of Lifestyle Medicine: Introduced Obesity management from the Obesity Medicine Association Perspective and presented the CPS Statement about Diabetes and Obesity in the Romanian conference. 6. In India - Collaborated with British Medical Journal and introduced obesity medicine to Indian health care providers and specialists and contributed to building modules and also did a round table to discuss the connection of diabetes and obesity. 7. Advocacy work for American College of Physicians: Two Years in a row advocated about challenges of Diabetes and Obesity and represented California state to the legislators regarding the bill to ease the process of making medications affordable and also ease the process of Prior authorization.
8. Started introduction of the role of continuous glucose monitors in Obesity medicine and was invited by the Washington Obesity Society to talk about CGM in Obesity management. 9. Within her organization: One Medical: Lead of chronic disease management program IMPACT helping health care providers navigate through Obesity management. 10. Paper publication about Lipodystrophy in a renowned journal.
Shagun has been a very active member of OMA and contributed in various ways to the organization by: 1. Serving as Associate editor for Obesity Pillars of Medicine Journal for the past 1 year and published two CPS statements with Dr. Bays. 2. Committees - She has been a very engaging committee member since she joined and has served in the Outreach committee, CME committee, and Speaker beaureu committee. Reviewed the CME educational content and course material, blogs, articles, and videos for the outreach committee. 3. Mentorship- has mentored up to 5 members during meetings and also offline and maintained continued relationships to help mentors in getting ABOM certification and starting obesity medicine practice 4. Teaching: Taught fundamentals course, participated in webinars, and also board review course. 5. Reviewed the abstracts with the CME committee for the speaker proposals.

Dr Bindlish has been making efforts with the state capital of California, so that patient suffering with obesity can received adequate access and treatment. Dr. Bindlish regularly conducts webinars, has been a speaker at multiple conferences and does community education on diabetes and obesity
Dr. Bindlish has been an excellent mentor. She made sure to contact during every conference she even made a group for Mentees to offer her support. She has helped me guide how to navigate community outreach in my city.

Has served on the OMA Advocacy Committee for the past several years. She has been a panelist on the Advocacy Committee's webinar Getting Anti-Obesity Medications Covered: A Primer In Patient Advocacy
She has been a staunch advocate for the coverage of AOMs in Pennsylvania. She volunteered as a consultant with the Pennsylvania DHHS Medicaid program and was instrumental in crafting language regarding the coverage of AOMs in Pennsylvania by this entity. This language includes standard FDA BMI criteria, but also makes provision for the treatment of those patients with normal weight, metabolic obesity. This is the only medical assistance program that recognizes that obesity is not solely BMI centric. As the result of this work, she was invited to and was subsequently appointed to the Pennsylvania DHHS P&T committee as well as the PA Drug Utilization Review Board. She continues to have input in regards to anti-obesity medications as supply has represented a challenge. She has been invited to speak at the American Association of Medicaid Pharmacists in Fargo ND in August 2024. (ii) Advocacy in the state of CT – testified along with Chris Gallagher before the Black and Puerto Rican Caucus to garner their support for Senate Bill 977. The bid for support was successful. She joined a delegation petitioning the Governor of CT to sign the bill. This bill allowing access to AOMS for Medicaid in CT was passed. (iii) Advocacy in the state of NY for Medicaid coverage of AOMs – she also has a practice in this state (iv) Chair of the PA Advocacy group – currently working on getting AOM coverage for state employees in PA; will be speaking at an OAC organized legislative briefing at the Pennsylvania Capitol in March 2024 in this regard. (iv) Advocacy in education – advocated for, and in partnership with primary care residencies at Guthrie, established a required rotation in Obesity Medicine for family medicine 3rd year residents; in addition to elective rotation opportunities for students and primary care residents (v) Advocated for and in partnership with FM residency established an Obesity Medicine tract where resident will have a longitudinal experience in Obesity Medicine over the 2nd and 3rd years. The tract also allows for conference and review course funding, and preparation of the resident to take ABOM certification by the completion of residency. This innovation was presented as a poster at the most recent Society of Teachers of Family Medicine. (vi) Ongoing education and obesity initiatives in primary care network of her organization She started the center for best health program at wellstar medical group in 2015, she designed multidisciplinary program, made all the physicians realize the importance of treating obesity as chronic disease, today we have 6 centers across metro Atlanta.
As Director of Obesity Medicine within the Guthrie Medical Group provided the local community with access to best clinical practices in obesity care Participated in community wide activities, webinars and health fairs to increase food intelligence and positive lifestyle changes to decrease community obesity burden Local media on nutrition and obesity Established and oversees a community garden which functions as a outdoor classroom for community members, a modality to involve schools in nutrition and gardening as well as environmental science; teaching nutrition to the community and donating food to local pantries, school back pack programs and food insecure patients
