The Obesity Medicine Association's "Obesity: Treat or Refer" Project Plan Corporate Advisory Council (CAC) Meeting OMA Spring Conference 04/22/2023
Business Case:
Multidisciplinary, evidence-based obesity care is a public health imperative as evidenced by the prevalence, incidence, and treatment-related data as reported in the 2023 version of the Obesity Medicine Association's (OMA) Adult Obesity Algorithm. https://obesitymedicine.org/obesity-algorithm/ Members of the OMA's Board of Trustees (BOT) have identified an overwhelming deficit in education, access to care, and implicit bias as it relates to the diagnosis and management of patients with obesity. This is in alignment with the OMA's Vision Statement, "People with the disease of obesity are comprehensively diagnosed and treated." Members of the OMA are uniquely poised to realize on this vision statement, because OMA members are physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and other healthcare providers who are experts in the clinical management of obesity. These clinicians follow a pillars-based approach by following the OMA's four core treatment pillars which include the interventions of nutrition, physical activity, behavior, and medication. The Obesity Medicine Association (OMA) endeavors to develop a(n) (official name TBD) "Obesity: Treat or Refer", educational campaign situated in the belief that there is a significant deficit in both the lay and professional medical communities around the concept that obesity must be treated first before any other obesity-related illnesses (diabetes, sleep apnea, HTN, etc.) will resolve. The concept of "treat the roots, not the fruits" resonates well in best understanding this concept. Further, a significant measure for primary care providers who practice within health systems must be aligned with various chronic disease models inclusive of their participation in an ACO, HEDIS, PCMH, measures and the like. In addition, CMS' eCQM measurements on population/public health, care coordination, and clinical effectiveness indicators also align with this concept. Problem Statement:
