Finally, the development and deployment of this campaign is a significant strategic endeavor for the OMA over the course of 2023 and beyond.
Goal Statements:
Develop a fiscally sustainable plan to realize the mission of the OMA as enumerated above to achieve the following goals in measurable and quantifiable means:
1) Increase providers' understanding of obesity as a complex and chronic disease.
2) Increase providers' comfort level and competency in treating obesity, or for those providers who are not comfortable treating obesity, increase referrals to obesity medicine experts in their patients' communities.
3) Create, curate, and mentor a community of obesity medicine experts (potentially referred to as "obesity medicine champions") inside and outside of health systems across the United States for which to offer support and education. For example, we could follow the "3D" concept of discussion, diagnosis, and direction concept as outlined by A. Alfadda (et al), "The 3Ds-Discussion, diagnosis, and direction: Elements for effective obesity care by healthcare professionals"; https://www.ejinme.com/article/S0953 6205(21)00012-1/fulltext Further, the approach of empowering primary care clinic-based weight management programs for the multidisciplinary treatment of obesity can be done effectively if delivered by obesity medicine-trained primary care providers who were able to demonstrate clinically significant weight loss results by S. Ro (et al), "Impact of a Community-Based Weight Management Program in a North Carolina Health Care System,", https://journals.stfm.org/familymedicine/online-first/lackey-2021-0619/ Project Scope: The project must seek external funding to be realized. Funding support will include (but not be limited to) supporting IT endeavors, staffing, marketing collateral, educational product curation, and time needed from the content experts who will support this project. It is felt that the most likely source for such funding will need to be sought from those industry partners whose principal clinical and business interests are aligned with that of the OMA. In developing the project, the OMA will closely follow a previous similar project example that focused on menopause https://www.menopauselearning.com/ and the OMA will partner with Project ECHO in order to best facilitate and provide valuable resources for this project. https://hsc.unm.edu/echo Dr. Sanjeev Arora founded Project ECHO to “ensure the right knowledge exists at the right place at the right time.” Further, partners of the Project ECHO program are aligned in achieving the following objectives:
• Equity in outcomes across underserved populations
