1. Roles and Responsibilities
1.1 Chair: A chair should be identified to lead the group in developing the guideline and to work with the methodologist and staff liaison to ensure adherence to methodologic standards. The chair also facilitates the interpersonal aspects of the group processes, so the members work in a spirit of collaboration with balanced contribution from all members.
Specific responsibilities of the chair include: 1. assisting the staff in planning conference calls and meetings 2. steering discussions according to the agenda
3. encouraging all members to contribute to discussions and activities of the group 4. remaining aware and constantly attentive to small group processes, including how the group interacts, 5. communicates, and makes decisions 6. establishing a climate of trust and mutual respect among members while remaining sensitive to preexisting inter-professional tensions and hierarchies 7. maintaining a unified group discussion free of sub-conversations and dominance 8. encouraging constructive debate without forcing agreement 9. winding up repetitive debate and disagreements through careful negotiation 10. summarizing main points and key decisions of a debate 11. working with the assistant chairs and support staff to delegate writing assignments and integrating completed assignments and group feedback into the draft guideline 12. Review literature search results and work with strategists to fine tune search strategy
1.2 Assistant-Chair:
Specific responsibilities of the assistant-chair include: 1. Assisting the chair on all conference calls to ensure active participation of all group members and prevent group think and other biases encouraging constructive debate without forcing agreement 2. Assisting with writing a portion of the manuscript 3. Review literature search results and work with strategists to fine tune search strategy
1.3 Methodologist:
The methodologists should be fluent with the guideline methodology, understand the process of systematic review, and have direct experience with prior guidelines developed by the AAO-HNS.
