2021-04-21 OMA Agenda - Board of Trustees

Recommendation #11. JOMA should publish OMA Abstracts and OMA meeting proceedings. Rationale: Establishment of JOMA will have a substantial impact on academic Fellows and others clinical scientists engaged in submitting and presenting OMA Abstracts. Once a year, JOMA should have a dedicated issue that publishes Abstracts accepted at OMA scientific sessions. Such a process should enhance OMA Abstract submission and is a standard practice of other medical societies. Additionally, speakers at OMA meetings should accompany their presentations by summary abstracts that will also be published in a proceedings document. This will require speakers craft their abstracts in a way that conveys substantive clinical messages – rather than simply describing an outline of what is presented. Recommendation #12. If the first publication of JOMA is planned for 2022, then a decision to proceed will require an OMA BOT decision to proceed sooner rather than later. Rationale: Beyond contractual issues with the publisher, the start of a medical journal is a laborious task involving many moving parts, logistics, and politics. While possible it could occur earlier, even if the OMA BOT agreed to establishing JOMA today, it will be challenging to have the article ready for publication January of 2022. Much groundwork will be required, followed by much editorial and publishing work afterwards. It can be done, but only if the OMA BOT has a commitment that JOMA be a world-class top of the line obesity journal.  Establish the premiere world-class scientific journal regarding the clinical management of obesity  Publish the first article in January 2022 or before  Publish 25 articles within the first 12 months after launch  Quarterly volumes  Decisions on article submissions within 3 weeks o Intermediate term goals (by 2024):  PubMed searchable  Publish data regarding anti-obesity pharma trials  Monthly issues  Decisions on article submissions within 3 weeks o Longer-term goals (by 2026): Recommendation #13. The following are reasonable publishing goals. o Short-term goals (by January 2022):

 Publish > 100 articles per year  Have an Impact Factor of > 3.5  Decisions on article submission within 3 weeks
