Having said this, when an article is submitted by an Editor, it is expected the Editor will decline to review his/her own submission. An exception would be if the Editor moderated a roundtable or point/counterpoint with a role limited to asking questions of others. In this case, the Editor can serve an editorial function without the work being considered a conflict of interest. The following should be disclosed, but not be considered inherent “conflicts of interest” that would negate OMA members from serving as journal Editors for JOMA: o OMA membership o OMA leadership positions (e.g., member or chairman of an OMA committee, Board of Director Position, or OMA Officer) o Membership in either non-competing or competing medical societies o Leadership in non-competing medical societies o Consulting, advising, or speaking for companies who may be funding journal submissions o Receipt of clinical research grants from companies who may be funding journal submission o Associate Editor or Editorial Board member of another journal The following should be disclosed and would be considered “conflicts of interest” that would need to be properly managed before serving as Editors for JOMA regarding applicable submissions: o Employment by companies submitting, or who are likely to submit journal manuscripts (e.g., employment by pharma companies, weight loss francizes, weight loss device companies, or similar entities) o Ownership of stock (beyond mutual funds) in companies who submit, or likely to submit journal manuscripts o Receipt of stocks, gifts, or services that may influence likely submissions o Patent or other ownerships directly related to likely submitted manuscripts o Employment by government agencies, charities, and professional and civic organizations having agendas that may influence decisions of submitted manuscripts o Intellectual passion, political or religious beliefs, personal relationships or institutional affiliations resulting in strong beliefs that substantially bias manuscript reviews or submissions o Family members with the above conflicts of interest o Leadership (Board of Director or Officer, not necessarily committee member) in a directly competing obesity medical organizations o Editor in Chief or Executive Editor of another journal
