2021-04-21 OMA Agenda - Board of Trustees

Recommendation #23. All things considered, the JOMA Working group recommends OMA move forward with it society Journal. Most respected medical societies have society journals. It is easy to name the society journal of commonly recognized medical societies. Conversely, it is challenging to identify well-known medical societies that do not have an affiliated society journal. Having an affiliated journal is a benchmark standard for most any medical society. Having an affiliated journal would benefit OMA members by: • Publishing and providing content reflective of the values of OMA • Allowing for broader dissemination and exposure of OMA content (e.g., Obesity Algorithms) • Adding value to membership by leveling any scientific reputation gap of OMA compared to other medical societies • Enhancing membership numbers by attracting more clinician-minded academicians • Creating greater opportunities for publication of clinical practice-oriented science • Attracting the interest of companies engaged in cutting-edge clinical science • Providing OMA a greater voice in advocating standards of care for patients with obesity • Opening opportunities for other potential educational programs • Recognizing that obesity is (finally) entering into a new phase of scientific exploration, drug development, and treatment acceptance. OMA and its members should be a part of these forthcoming revolutionary events.
