OMA + AMA Membership Considerations R/T Retaining OMA’s HOD Seat OMA BOT Meeting 04/24/2024
Submitted by: Teresa Fraker Current State Analysis • What is the OMA’s current “run rate” of physicians who are members of the AMA?
As of 03/31/2024
*Projected 03/31/2026
OMA Physician Members AMA Confirmed Members
2,810
3,400
425
680
Percentage
15.12%
20.00%
*Based on the current physician membership growth percentage year-over-year of 10%
**We would have needed an additional 137 AMA members to hit the 20% minimum with the March 2024 data pull if we were to be evaluated by the AMA in 2024
• What is the expectation of the AMA relative to dual (OMA + AMA) membership by our physicians? By the time OMA is next evaluated (5-year analysis after the last evaluation of 2021) which is early 2026, we need to hit a minimum of 20% of our physician members who are also members of the AMA. • When does the AMA (i.e. what month) expect that the OMA should send our data to them for analysis? Based on the experience from 2021, the OMA was expected to demonstrate its “current state” of AMA membership in March of 2021, so we estimate that this same “current state” analysis would occur in March of 2026. There is certainly a chance that the AMA may ask for this data at the beginning of 2026, which means that the OMA must be prepared to submit its year-end 2025 data in early 2026. • Based on the current growth of physicians in the OMA & the expectations of the AMA percentage within the OMA, when should the OMA do a “push” for AMA membership? For example, if an OMA member joins AMA in 9/2024 & lapses their membership in 9/2025, this scenario does not help the OMA because this (fictitious) member would have lapsed their AMA membership before the data would be due to the AMA. To be extremely proactive, the OMA should start a campaign relative to dual OMA + AMA membership beginning in April of 2025 with more aggressive promotions by August or September of 2025 to ensure that the physicians’ AMA memberships are still active when the OMA is required to remit its data to the AMA for their validation processes & procedures.
