The EC members prefer establishing a document that serves purely as a form of guidance or a set of principles for practicing obesity medicine instead of defined as “standards.” Dr. Fitch shares that the vision for this document would be outlining the widely agreed upon basis of treatment for obesity medicine that OMA supports. Dr. Lazarus believes that if OMA’s perspective is voiced and the clinical side is highlighted that this can be extremely impactful work. Education (Conference Planning) and AMA Delegates/Membership Task Force Meeting Updates: - Dr. Fitch says she will be sharing the efforts of Joan and Dr. Pennings with the Education Conference Planning Committee and that after review, they will move forward with a conference advisory group (CAG) for the 2024 Annual Conference. - Due to time constraints, Dr. Alexander shares that the EC can table the topic of the Membership Task Force until the March 2023 EC meeting but informs the EC that the taskforce is working to have a proposal ready before the BOT meeting in April. Press Interviews at Spring 2023 Conference and NYC Conference Registration Numbers Updates: - Mrs. Fraker shares that there has been press interest for NYC. The EC believes that OMA should be represented by our president, Dr. Fitch, and if she is not speaking, she should assign who will be representing OMA to the public. The EC also shares that it could be beneficial for OMA to conduct outreach to local media for the conference in order to increase visibility. - In regard to conference registration numbers, Mrs. Fraker shares that at about nine weeks out, OMA is outpacing our Boston 2019 registration numbers. NYC is currently projected to be the highest attended OMA conference yet! Expansion of OMA’s Four Pillars: - The EC discussed if there should be the addition of a 5 th pillar or the maintenance of the current 4 pillars. The way in which bariatric surgery is often referred to as an appendage was mentioned along with some potential titles for the 5 th pillar such as “procedures and devices”/ “medical or medical interventions”. In the interest of time, Dr. Fitch tabled this topic until the next EC meeting. Call to Adjourn: The EC meeting was adjourned at 4:04 pm (MST) by Presiding Officer, Dr. Angela Fitch. Closing Remarks: Dr. Angela Fitch ends the meeting by sharing that she was recently a guest on the Dr. Phil show to discuss pediatric obesity and stigma bias alongside Faith Newsome!
